Mabel Irene Wall Pope

mabel-irene-wall-popeJust discovered my loving baby sitter and nursery aide I had as a small child has died. She was someone I have great memories of and she will be greatly missed. She lived a very long life, wow….101 years old!

I stayed over at her house a few times over night when my parents would go on vacation without us on rare occasions.

Mabel Irene Wall Pope, 101, passed from this life on January 18, 2014 in Wichita Falls, Texas.

The family will receive visitors from 6:00-7:00 PM, Monday, January 20, 2014 at Lunn’s Colonial Funeral Home.

Mabel was born November 12, 1912 in Lindale, Texas to George and Edna (Whaley) Wall. Her family moved to Waurika, Oklahoma by way of covered wagon when she was 11 or 12.

She often spoke of her memories of walking behind the wagon and crossing the Red River on the way to Oklahoma.

Mabel married William Martin (Buster) Pope on September 26, 1931. They were married for 35 years. They had 5 children Edna Joan, Jacklyn, Jimmy, Billy, and Randy. Mabel was a very active grandma. She played baseball, rode roller coasters, went to movies, traveled, and shopped with her grandkids. She devoted much of her time as a caregiver. She was not only a vital part in the raising of her own family but also helped raise many others.

She worked in the Faith Baptist Church nursery for 25+ years as well as kept children in her home. Mabel touched many lives.

Mabel was a woman of strong faith and relied on that faith throughout her life to get her not only through the hardships of the times she lived in but also the challenges of everyday life. She never questioned those challenges but instead conquered them head on. Everyone that knew her described her as a strong woman with a strong heart. She was a faithful member of Faith Baptist Church and a member of the Faith Singers. She traveled with a senior group by bus to places like Branson and Graceland. When preparing for a trip, she would have her suitcase packed a week in advance. She was always ready for an adventure and she never met a stranger. She also loved playing Chickenfoot and 42 with family and friends.

Mabel is survived by 2 sons, Billy Pope of Norman, Oklahoma, and Randy Pope and wife Ruth, of Wichita Falls, 7 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, and 4 great great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents George and Edna, son Jimmy, two daughters Jacklyn and Edna Joan, grandson, Donald Murray Pope, daughter-in-law Linda Pope, and her siblings Florence (Sis), Troy, Olan, Opal, Roy, Henry and Lawson. Mabel was fortunate enough to have a daughter-in-law, Ruth, who was her beloved primary care giver for many years. Ruth took her to all her appointments and always made sure she was well cared for; Mabel’s family is so thankful to have had Ruth to look after their cherished family member.

Thank you to all the special caregivers at Senior Care Center and Hospice of Wichita Falls especially Ashley and Ellen for their excellent care.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Hospice of Wichita Falls, 4909 Johnson Road, 76310.
